Plus like the SPD-20 Octapad, you can add a couple of foot triggers to the SPS-S and the SPD-SX. You can come across people offloading little-used SPD-SX's, just be prepared to pay more, as they're obviously a more recent model coming into the second hand market. However, if you can, do check out the later version, the SPD-SX, as that has way more capabilities than the older SPD-S. I didn't get the chance to have it long enough to muck around with the sampling capabilities though, although Cam did show me a little bit of sampling and chopping up sounds that the unit is capable of. I set up one of the 'kit' layouts to more or less simulate one of my mini-timbale set ups, so the 9 pads had (from memory) the two timbales - high and low, two cowbell sounds, a clave/block sound, high-and low agogo bell sounds (essential for samba patterns), a crash sound and windchimes. Thanks MarkYes, I borrowed one from one of my students Cameron (who's also a good mate) to do a couple of percussion gigs last year. Thanks Drumbledore, how about the Roland spd-s? do you have any experience with those?

But at the moment I'm thinking of using my Roland Handsonic HPD-10 as a sound source on my left (replacing one of my side snares), run a lead from that to a KT-10 kick trigger to place right of my main DW kick pedal.that way I can have an easy-to-set-up e-kit addition to the acoustic set (no need to muck around with a module, too many patch leads and pads, etc), plus the pads on the Handsonic can be played with either my hands or sticks, saving me carrying around mini-timbales, LP Compact Congas, windchimes etc. Believe it or not, I changed a Japanese percussion sound into an octoban one! I then assigned it to all eight pads, varying the pitches from high to low, with a press of a button I can add some reverb to them.

If you spend time tweaking around each sound's parameters (instrument sound, level, pitch, decay, pan, curve, effect send level) and effects (reverb, delay, chorus, flanger), you'll be quite surprised what you can produce. They have more sounds and options than the SPD 11 and better polyphony. SPD 8's & 11's are a bit limited, I own two SPD 20's, one that I got second hand fairly cheap.
